Prepare for an unforgettable underwater experience at Whale Rock, a dive site often lauded as one of the most beautiful in Raja Ampat. Located within the Fiabacet Islands, southeast of Misool, this site gets its distinctive name from the whale-like shape of the rocky islet when viewed from the south.
Whale Rock offers an intermediate diving experience, making it a rewarding destination for those with an Advanced Open Water certification. We recommend this certification due to the potential for moderate to brisk currents, which often make for thrilling drift dives along the reef.
Divers will find a stunning wall and reef system, plunging from approximately 5 meters down to a maximum depth of 35–40 meters. The vibrant coral-garden sections, particularly rich in sea fans and soft corals, are concentrated in the 8–18 meter range, where light penetration is optimal and currents deliver a steady supply of nutrients. This area presents a kaleidoscope of colors, with profuse Dendronephthya soft corals blanketing the walls in shades of violet, rose, and brilliant orange, alongside huge branching gorgonian fans.
The water temperature at Whale Rock is consistently warm, generally ranging from 26°C to 30°C throughout the year, with occasional cooler thermoclines at depth.
Whale Rock is a treasure trove of biodiversity. As you drift along the beautifully encrusted reef, divers will encounter a rich variety of marine life. Keep an eye out for impressive schools of Chevron Barracuda and Bigeye Trevally, often hunting smaller baitfish. Longfin Bannerfish and various juveniles swirl around the vibrant corals.
We frequently spot Hawksbill Turtles gracefully cruising the reef, and Blacktip Reef Sharks are common inhabitants. Look closely at the gorgonian fans, as you might discover the tiny, elusive Denise's pygmy seahorse. Schools of Fusiliers add to the dynamic underwater scenery. Beyond these, the site is home to nudibranchs, tiger cowries, colorful gobies, shrimp, parrotfish, and wrasses.
Misool is renowned for its overall marine richness, and while not guaranteed at every dive site, the region offers the potential for encounters with larger pelagic species, including manta rays and even wobbegong sharks at other nearby sites.
While diving at Whale Rock is possible year-round, the primary diving season for Misool, offering the most consistent conditions, generally runs from October to April. During these months, divers can expect calmer seas and excellent visibility, often extending beyond 25 meters. November and December are often considered the zenith of the dive season, with stable weather and superb visibility.
