Prepare for an exhilarating advanced diving experience at HP Reef, famously known as Rainbow Reef, located on the North Malé East Rim. This dive site is a protected Marine Protected Area (MPA) and truly lives up to its vibrant nickname, offering an explosion of color and life beneath the waves.

Dive Site Features and Topography

HP Reef is a stunning thila, or pinnacle, intricately sculpted into a narrow, current-swept pass. Divers will find a dramatic underwater landscape characterized by extensive overhangs, fascinating caves, and impressive coral blocks. The topography is further enhanced by a signature vertical chimney swim-through, which ascends to approximately 25 m.

Diving Conditions

We classify HP Reef as an advanced dive site due to the consistently strong currents that sweep through the channel. These currents, while challenging, are precisely what make this dive site so dynamic, bringing nutrient-rich waters that fuel the incredible coral growth and attract abundant marine life. A drift dive is the typical approach here, requiring solid buoyancy control and current management skills. The maximum depth divers can explore typically ranges from 7 m to 30 m, though some areas may extend to 35 m or even 40 m. The most vibrant coral and fish activity is often found in the upper and mid-depths. Water temperature at HP Reef is consistently warm, generally ranging from 25°C to 30°C. An Advanced Open Water certification is required to dive this site.

Marine Life Encounters

HP Reef is renowned as the "soft-coral capital" of the Maldives, where divers will be mesmerized by a blaze of blue, orange, and yellow soft corals, gorgonians, sea fans, and sea whips that carpet the reef walls and overhangs. The strong currents are a magnet for pelagic action. You can frequently encounter Grey Reef Sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) and Whitetip Reef Sharks (Triaenodon obesus) patrolling the reef. Keep an eye out for majestic Spotted Eagle Rays (Aetobatus narinari) gliding gracefully by. Schools of Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), Dogtooth Tuna (Gymnosarda unicolor), Bluestripe Snapper (Lutjanus kasmira), and Yellowback Fusiliers (Caesio teres) are common sights. Divers may also spot the impressive Humphead Wrasse (Napoleon) (Cheilinus undulatus), and occasionally, the elusive Scalloped Hammerhead Shark (Sphyrna lewini). Other marine residents include jacks, trevallies, rainbow runners, moray eels, nudibranchs, octopuses, and turtles.

Hazards and Recommendations

Given the strong currents and the presence of overhead environments like caves and swim-throughs, we recommend this dive site for advanced divers with excellent buoyancy control. Divers should also be aware of potential boat traffic in the area. We advise diving with an experienced instructor or guide who is familiar with the local conditions and can manage the drift dive profile effectively.
