Prepare for an exhilarating dive into the heart of the South Malé Atoll at Guraidhoo Kandu, a renowned dive site offering an unforgettable experience for advanced divers. This classic two-corner channel drift is celebrated for its dynamic currents and an incredible concentration of marine life. We recommend this dive site for those holding an Advanced Open Water certification due to the consistently strong currents and depths.
Guraidhoo Kandu is an expansive dive site, actually comprising two main channels, Guraidhoo Kandu and Lhosfushi Kandu, separated by the vibrant soft-coral ridge known as Medhu Faru. The site features a diverse topography, including dramatic channels, exhilarating drift sections, impressive drop-offs, captivating overhangs, and thriving reef systems. Divers will find average depths around 25 m, with the reef descending to a maximum depth of 40 m in certain areas, such as Guraidhoo Corner. Water temperatures here are consistently warm, typically ranging from 27°C to 30°C year-round.
The currents at Guraidhoo Kandu are notoriously strong, creating the perfect conditions for a thrilling drift dive but also presenting hazards such as turbulent inner-channel down-currents and surge in shallow reef sections. We strongly advise divers to be proficient in drift diving techniques and to carry a reef hook, which is often essential for safely observing marine life in the stronger currents. Additionally, divers should be aware of potential boat traffic in this active pass.
This dive site is part of the Guraidhoo Kanduolhi Marine Protected Area, established in 1995, which spans approximately 352 hectares and contributes to the immense biodiversity found here. As an Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA), Guraidhoo Kandu is particularly significant for aggregations of Grey Reef Sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) and Whitetip Reef Sharks (Triaenodon obesus).
When the incoming current flows, the blue-water mouth of the channel becomes a highway for schooling pelagic species. Divers can expect to encounter impressive numbers of Grey Reef Sharks and Whitetip Reef Sharks, along with powerful Dogtooth Tuna (Gymnosarda unicolor), Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis), and Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda). Keep an eye out for the graceful Spotted Eagle Rays (Aetobatus narinari) gliding through the blue.
Along the reef, divers will find Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), vibrant Bluestripe Snappers (Lutjanus kasmira), and the distinctive Honeycomb Moray (Gymnothorax favagineus). The majestic Humphead Wrasse (Napoleon) (Cheilinus undulatus) is also a frequent visitor to these reefs.
During the southwest monsoon season, roughly from May to October, Guraidhoo Kandu becomes a hotspot for Reef Manta Rays (Mobula alfredi). These gentle giants gather in the channel, offering incredible opportunities for observation as they feed on plankton brought in by the currents. Peak manta activity is typically observed from June through October, with July and August often seeing the highest numbers.
Guraidhoo Kandu promises a thrilling and richly rewarding dive experience for those seeking high-octane action and abundant marine life in the Maldives.
