Prepare for an unforgettable encounter with one of the ocean's most majestic creatures at Manta Point (Rannalhi), a renowned dive site nestled in the vibrant South Male Atoll of the Maldives. This intermediate dive site is celebrated as a dedicated manta cleaning station, offering divers an exceptional opportunity to witness reef manta rays in their natural habitat.
Manta Point (Rannalhi) is characterized by a small, round giri, a coral pinnacle that divers can typically circumnavigate in about an hour. Its gently sloping reef hosts several distinct cleaning stations, primarily found among coral blocks at depths ranging from approximately 5 meters to 15 meters. Here, divers will find reef mantas (Mobula alfredi) gracefully queuing for the meticulous services of bluestreak cleaner wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus). The topography is relatively easy, with the main attraction being the seasonal aggregations of mantas. Beyond the cleaning stations, a gentle drop-off descends to a maximum depth of around 30 meters, where additional marine life thrives.
The dive site is suitable for divers holding an Open Water certification. Water temperatures at Manta Point (Rannalhi) typically range from a comfortable 26°C to 30°C. While currents here can be variable, ranging from mild to strong, they often bring in the plankton that attracts the mantas. The peak season for manta ray sightings in the South Male Atoll area is generally from April to November, and sometimes extending into mid-December, coinciding with the southwest monsoon which brings plankton-rich waters.
As the name suggests, the stars of Manta Point are undoubtedly the magnificent Reef Manta Rays. Divers will often settle onto the sandy bottom near the cleaning stations and observe these gentle giants as they hover and even barrel-roll overhead, allowing the cleaner wrasse to remove parasites. It's a truly mesmerizing spectacle.
Beyond the mantas, the reef and its slopes are teeming with diverse marine life. You can expect to encounter Whitetip Reef Sharks (Triaenodon obesus) patrolling the area, along with the distinctive Spotted Eagle Rays (Aetobatus narinari). Both Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) are frequent visitors, gracefully gliding through the water. The reef also hosts schools of Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis), Oriental Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus vittatus), and Bluestripe Snapper (Lutjanus kasmira), adding to the vibrant underwater tapestry.
While Manta Point (Rannalhi) offers incredible experiences, divers should be aware of potential hazards. Variable currents can be present, so we recommend good buoyancy control and listening carefully to your instructor's briefing. Boat traffic in the area also requires vigilance, particularly during ascent and descent. As with any dive in a healthy marine ecosystem, dangerous marine life can occasionally be present, though encounters are rare. Lastly, surge can sometimes be a factor, especially in shallower areas or during certain weather conditions.
