Jetty · Reef

While Pianemo is renowned globally for its breathtaking topside vistas—a postcard-perfect labyrinth of turquoise lagoons and sugarloaf karst islands visible from its famous viewpoint—the underwater realm at Piaynemo Jetty offers an equally enchanting, albeit more tranquil, experience for divers.
This dive site is perfectly suited for beginners, macro enthusiasts, and those seeking a relaxed check dive. With a difficulty rating of beginner, divers will find the conditions welcoming and easy to navigate. An Open Water certification is all that is required to explore this gentle site.
We typically explore this dive site to a maximum depth of 20 m, with shallower areas ideal for extended bottom times and safety stops. Divers can expect water temperatures ranging from 27°C to 29°C, offering comfortable conditions year-round. Currents here are generally mild to non-existent, making it a serene environment for all skill levels.
The topography of Piaynemo Jetty features a shallow coral reef surrounding the jetty pilings, which then transitions to a sandy seabed dotted with scattered coral patches. The jetty's pylons are beautifully encrusted with vibrant soft corals and sponges, creating a rich habitat that teems with life.
Piaynemo Jetty is a macro photographer's dream, offering an abundance of fascinating small creatures. Divers will delight in spotting the famously shy and colorful Mandarinfish (Synchiropus splendidus), often seen darting among the coral rubble. We frequently encounter the charming Clark's Anemonefish (Amphiprion clarkii), diligently guarding their anemone homes.
Keep a keen eye out for the elusive Ornate Ghost Pipefish (Solenostomus paradoxus), masters of camouflage that blend seamlessly with their surroundings. The sandy bottom and coral patches are also prime locations to find the unique Tasselled Wobbegong (Eucrossorhinus dasypogon), often resting motionless. Schools of shimmering Glassfish / Sweepers (Parapriacanthus sp.) create mesmerizing curtains of silver, while the intelligent Bigfin Reef Squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) may be seen gracefully moving through the water.
While the conditions are generally calm, we advise divers to be mindful of occasional boat traffic, especially near the jetty, and to always follow their instructor's guidance. The best time to visit Pianemo, both for diving and enjoying the iconic viewpoint, is during Raja Ampat's dry season, which typically runs from October to April, when sea conditions are generally calmer and visibility is clearer.
Pianemo (Piaynemo Jetty) offers a truly low-key and photogenic counterpoint to some of Raja Ampat's more current-swept sites, promising a memorable dive for those who appreciate the intricate beauty of the reef's smaller inhabitants.
